Design trends and effects, can it really be bad if it facilitates the desired end-result?

I saw a post on Facebook this morning mentioning something about how a drop-shadow was used on a skydiving poster… or something like that, I didn’t get to see the poster. I think the thread was meant to be about how the use of certain design effects or trends used out of context can lead to ridiculous results. The thread actually turned into a drop-shadow bashing… I am not trying to defend drop-shadows, they are after all the (current) mullet of design. The comments on Facebook got me thinking of my pet-design-hates – and how as a good graphic designer you should have none.

At the top of my list was Skeuomorphism > Read here. The comment about it being good or bad, sums it up… and in that the same (probably) goes for almost any design-related trend or feature… can it really be bad if it facilitates the desired end-result?
