Portable Propaganda

I am in the process of doing a client illustration that will be used on some of their marketing material including their vehicle signage. This got me thinking about a vehicle wrap I was commissioned to do a bunch of years back and how successful that “campaign”  has been to this day (I see that car around all time, you cant’ miss it). If done properly, vehicle signage is a remarkably effective marketing tool.

Coincidently I was recently forwarded some info concerning vehicle signage.

The Power of Portable Propaganda via SitePoint > Excerpt:

How often have you driven alongside a car or truck bearing company signage? Just about every day, right? Well, there’s a reason for it: brand signage is a great mobile advertisement. Never contemplated putting a decal on your car before? I recommend you reconsider. How often have you looked up a web address spotted on a car in front of you at the traffic lights, or recalled a company because you’ve seen their vehicles on the road? I have plenty of times.

But first, consider the image your car sends out. If you own an old clapper of a car, or a very sporty, new luxury car, think about your market. A bomb on the road may send the message that your services are cheap and nasty, or that you’re unsuccessful at what you do; similarly, if you drive a very fancy car, you may be construed as being too expensive or over the top.

If, however, your vehicle is somewhere in between, you may have just the right mobile billboard for your business.

So what should you put on your car? Well, I’ve seen plenty of examples featuring just the URL, but these don’t relay what the business does, unless your web address lists your main service. I’ve also seen a lot of vehicles with a business name only, so I’ve had no idea of what they do or how to contact them.

Here’s the minimum you should have: your business name, logo, product or service, and website address. Remember, though, that most drivers don’t want to read a novel on the back of your car — so keep it succinct.

Techniques for combining fonts

The fine people at Hoefler & Frere-Jones have compiled this very handy post (was originally sent out as an email) on how to combine fonts > excerpt to follow:

Is there a way to know what fonts will work together? Building a palette is an intuitive process, but expanding a typographic duet to three, four, or even five voices can be daunting. Here are four tips for navigating the typographic ocean, all built around H&FJ’s Highly Scientific First Principle of Combining Fonts: keep one thing consistent, and let one thing vary.

Sixty40 Magazine Issue 6

This Issue (issue 06) was designed with love and care and is my favorite issue to date (I am never 100% satisfied with my own work). The reason I have it posted here is because I sent Issue 8 to the printers last week. Ian Kruger (Editor) will be cracking the whip and the mag will be in your grubby hands (hopefully) soon. With issue 8 (spanning some additional changes that will only be applied in issue 9) comes some changes to the general design approach. More on that later, no spoiler here.

Enjoy the online version, Issue 7 will be posted online as soon as Issue 8 hits the streets.

Sixty40 Magazine – (#07) Cruel Summer

I finished design on issue #7 about 3 weeks ago. After that I sent it to the editors and then it went off to print. It should be hitting stores country wide next week (the subscribers should have them in their grubby paws already).

I will at some point (soon) add all the work I have done for Sixty40 magazine to my portfolio (time is never on my side).

Why “Cruel Summer”?
For those of you that don’t surf, you probably won’t know this; summer in South Africa is really bad as far as getting good waves are concerned… the weather is awesome, the waves are terrible. We need the big cold fronts that form in winter to create swell and the right wind conditions… especially where I live (Plettenberg Bay).

On the cover: underground charger Wesley Potts shot by Spex.

Issue overview:

The Cruel Summer issue brings you all the latest bodyboarding action from SA and around the world all packed into one colourful package with cheesy 80′s music overtones.

We kick it off with coverage of SA’s first carbon neutral music festival, Rocking the Daisies. We then delve into the brain of former south coast resident, Darren Halse, who is currently chasing precious World Tour points while holding down a full time job in dreary ol’ England. We keep up with our regular fitness instalment that should have you ripping whenever the occasional swell comes our way this summer. We also managed to track down Colin Van Dongen for our Create section where we quiz him on his new DVD series, Don’t Stop Dreaming. Then just in time for Christmas we profile the latest and greatest boards from the top guys in the business so you know exactly what Santa needs to drop in your stocking this year.

This is all neatly wrapped into what my art director describes as ‘vomit inducing colour’. So grab a copy and enjoy.

Enjoy! ed. [Ian Kruger]

This issue hits shelves on Wednesday, 10 December 2007.
